Artificial intelligence: The Mitchells vs the Machines

A dysfunctional family on a road trip, a robotic apocalypse on the horizon, and the unexpected turn of event, as they are the last hope that humanity has against an evil robot.

In most popular movies, action heroes have a lot of strength and do things coordinated in every way, but the Mitchells have a weakness.

And I know what you are thinking if the robot will turn evil? 

Yes... PAL turn evil and took over the world.

The world-first smart personal assistant PAL just got dumped and she began to overact and decided to take over the world.

You may not be a movie person, someone who loves comedy movie, but if you are a tech person, you are going to like this movie.

Am sure you may know the director from his previous work of Gravity Falls.

His ingenuity is once again put in making a quirky movie about a family that is not the average family.

An individual maybe is different, sound different, act different and even be outcast by society for what he/she is, that does not make a person a lesser human.

It just shows that you are a person that’s not doing things as society may want.

Katie felt like an outcast, acted like one, even got laughed out at a very young age, but she made it out.

On her way to achieving her dream, the robot apocalypse hits, and her family became the unexpected heroes with her as the heroine in the tale.

You may think you have seen it all but you haven't!

The content of the movie 

The Mitchells v the Machines is a great movie with all the unexpected in it.

As a movie, it has loose theatricals, but much crazy attention to details.

It is the perfect description of what a modern dysfunctional technophobic father and his family relationship look like.

The Mitchell's

The animated action-comedy is packed with all things funny like nothing you have seen before.

Technology may be harmful in many ways, but some people can find solace in it, Katie found solace in tech, her younger brother found it in dinosaurs.

Here it comes;

Katie Mitchell aspires to become a filmmaker in Kentwood while her father is a man who doesn’t know anything about technology and can best be described as technophobic.

Katie and her father Rick don’t always get along because, whenever she needs his attention, he simply ignores her.  

In Mitchell’s family, there is a poor father-daughter relationship, this got worse during a family dinner when her dad gets into a disagreement with her and broke her laptop the night before going to Kentwood school for filmmakers.

Her mother fears the family relationship could be broken down for ever, thus, ask Katie’s father to fix it, and the father cancels her flight ticket and decided they go on a road trip so they can cement the broken relationship on the way.

Meanwhile, as the dysfunctional family began trying to work out modalities to cement the family, an entrepreneur Mark Brown suddenly declares that his highly intelligent AI PAL is absolute.

He then lunches a new line of robots in her place.

This however does not sit well with PAL, she decided to take matters into her own hands by hacking the newly developed PAL Pro, take over Mark Brown’s industry and brought about a robot uprising.

Pal decided that she would imprison mankind and give them the internet as a parting gift. As such, she was preparing to launch people into deep space. The Mitchells avoided the AI takeover and Rick decided that they should hide until the Robo apocalypse is over.

They are soon found out by two robots and what worse, it worsens the father-daughter relationship and the war against machines deepens.

The two defective robots became part of the family road trip and the quest to end the evil queen Pal by uploading the kill codes to shut her down, but their attempt was foiled.

The Mitchells disguise themselves and travel the road to Silicon Valley to PAL Lab HQ, but were soon discovered and their missioned failed. 

Rick and Linda were captured and Katie and her little brother Aaron got away.

Pal decided to create smart and stronger robots called PAL MAX Prime to hunt down the children and capture them. 

Katie discovered from her father's video recording a long time ago that her father sacrificed his dream to raise her as a child. This changed her perspective of who her parents are and decided to give her all to rescue them.

The trio Katie, Aaron and their Dog Munchi infiltrated the PAL base again, with Munchi as the secret weapon. Munchi as a dog can cause a malfunction in the robot's programming.

Pal Max cannot classify the species of Munchi, and this singular act is causing the robots to malfunction.

Family 

And the family were able to capture PAL and free the rest of the world, Katie and her father re-establish their relationship after her father found out how he has been missing in her life.

The dysfunctional family that could not do anything right becomes the cornerstone of saving the world.

The movie cast 

Mitchells verse the Machines is a 2021 American computer-animated sci-fi movie from the stables of Sony Pictures Animation with Director Micheal Rianda and Jeff Rowe  and also written by the same directors.

With these directors, it was possible to have a family loving movie.

Katie is a character played by Abbi Jacobson as the main protagonist. A girl that needs her father Rick played by Danny McBride  and Linda voiced by Maya Rudolph, Aaron Voiced by Michael Rianda , Mark Brown voiced by Eric Andre, PAL voiced by Olivia Colman , these guys are great actors to have embodied their character perfectly for us to enjoy the movie as we did.

The collective work of the actors 

Let me speak like the novice that I’m.

When it comes to handpicking actors to act certain roles in movies, I have no idea how it is done.

I’m certain of one thing though, the actors that voiced The Mitchells verse The Machines sure know how to put in their best emotionally, psychologically, morally and physically to bring out the best in this computer-generated animation CGA.

This must be the only reason why such an animation has gotten a high rating on a site that has never given good ratings for movies in the past.

The movie was not hyped, it just portrays what we know.

Most scenes are facts in our society today and acted these obvious facts became a wonderful story in the Mitchells vs the Machines.

Popular sites rating of Mitchells Vs The Machines 

At sites like Rottentomatoes, Metacritic etc, movies are criticized on every level. And the worst of them all is Rottentomatoes;

To get a high rating on this site is simply impossible, but in the case of Mitchell's verse the Machines, am surprised to see the movie getting a 97% and with an audience of 89% where movies like Mortal Kombat 2021 only get a 55%.

The side effect of Technology 

I for one love technology and write articles about what is artificial intelligence ? Affiliate marketing, how to make money online  etc.

My whole blog was started because I love the idea of technology-ai.

Even though, I write about several niche topics, my love and attention to everything that has to do with artificial intelligence does not change.

There is also a growing feeling in me about ai-apocalypse, which is what the Mitchells vs the Machines is centred on.

The idea of having the machines take over the world is scary and traumatizing if you think of it deeper.

But, we can’t just unlearn what we have learnt about technology and go back to the stone age just because we are afraid of our creations taking over shortly.

If the world will end by robotic apocalypse, it is yet to be known, but these we know for sure;

Extreme online generation 

Social media and a bunch of content have taken over what human relationship should be.

New and emerging technologies may cause more harm to the family as an institution than do good if we do not maintain family values.

Parents are having fewer times to interact with their children, spouse finds it difficult to share quality time without doing one thing or another on their phones.

When technology becomes our focus, we may be left out in enjoying the best values of what a family can offer, the Mitchells can’t even share a family moment without been interrupted by technology.

This calls for concern that;

Maybe such a call come from watching the movie-the Mitchells vs the Machines or not, but what matters here is, having concerns that family members are infused in the world of technology.

AI Mimicking human emotions 

Artificial intelligence no emotions is our goal, what if ai can now read emotions?

What if robots can mimic human emotions? What if they go haywire when they feel rejected and abandon? What if they could show us more love and care better than other humans? What if?…

More questions need answers, when and how an ai robot should have feelings or if a robot can have feelings anytime?

An essential characteristic of intelligent beings is been able to express emotion. 

Can ai have emotion like a biological creature?

Can we state emotional ai examples and their applications in the real world and how it benefits us as humans?

Pal revolted because its emotion hurt when it was dumped by its creator.

Although, Emotional AI is a futurist idea and a work in progress, how will these machines interpret the emotions of been discarded because of a software upgrade, hardware damaged, better futures implementation?

Let’s not make life more complicated for ourselves “Artificial Intelligence is misreading human emotion ” hoping it won’t cause more harm than good in the future.

The heroes in the movie 

Artificial Intelligence ai topics are my speciality, so it does not matter, when I come across movies that discuss the possibility of AI, I can’t just don’t want to do right by myself.

As humans we set in out our goals and life expectations, sometimes we achieve them and sometimes we don’t.

This is the same for Rick and his daughter Katie.

In their way of trying to be relevant and accommodate each other, they must have overstepped their boundaries.

Mitchell's vs The Machines 

But life itself is all about making mistakes and taking corrections from the mistakes. 

Establishing and keeping family relationship has always been a challenge for most families.

And Mitchell's are not left out of this struggle, what I see here in this movie is a father trying to uphold what family values are in the 21st century.

It shows nobility from the dad and deep concern that a father has in trying to amend his wrong by appealing to his daughter, although she may not understand, he is doing his best as a technophobic man.

A family is a complicated institution and without a doubt the smallest institution where learning first takes place, therefore, it is important to know, feel, and try to make amends for the betterment of the family.

We always take the sacrifice of our parents, our family in vein because we always look at things from our perspective, the character RICK tries to be relevant and show he can change for the better, an attitude that made even robot rethink their position. 

Whatsoever the situation is, we can rise above it.

    

Is the movie any good?

Movies for one are meant to have humour and very accommodating for most people and age groups, that's the one thing The Mitchells vs The Machines has.

It covers a wide range of family issues and how they can be solved.

Although is a sci-fi movie, it is embedded with lessons an average human intellect can understand.

Communication within the family has always been problems for both children and parent. With the parent every day trying to do what is best for their children and the children always wanting to rebel against their parents.

Mitchells verse the machines is not short on depicting how this problem is affecting the 21st century typical home, and how technology is always standing in the way of the relationship between siblings and parents.

Am sure if you are a parent reading this, and you have watched the movie, you would notice that this family because of technology cannot keep their phones or laptop to enjoy a family meal.

A father who wants the family to be technology-free and kids that always want their parent to love and support them.

For a family movie, Mitchell and the Machines has made me realize how much time we spend on our systems trying to check on social media post, keep in touch with our distant friends and all.

We give our siblings and our parents less and less of our time because we neglect family values.

Which am not going to say it is a good thing, but when computer and technology are taking much of our time it becomes a bad thing and we can try to avoid it and live like humans for a change.

On the flip side here, children can do more on their laptops and be creative, parents should learn to appreciate their children and be supportive once in a while so that the children can grow to realize their dreams.

The best thing about this movie is how it portrays the hardship both parents and their children are experiencing.

Our parents are always wanting us to be the best version of ourselves under their supervision and guidance, but we always feel they are stopping our shine.

The movie is full of funny clips and creativity, that something like about the movie.
